Atomic Age Goes Beneath the Surface

This April 1953 article previews the Navy’s nuclear submarine program as the USS Nautilus (SSN-571) was nearing completion at the Electric Boat Company in Groton, Connecticut. The world’s first nuclear-powered submarine, Nautilus would be commissioned in September 1954 and make her first underway run on nuclear power in January 1955, opening a new era in submarine warfare.
