On September 23, 2009, Ford Murray, a docent on the USS Missouri, visited the Charleston, SC area and was welcomed warmly by Dick Trammell, Director, and David Clark, Senior Curator and Director of Exhibits at Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum. The USS Yorktown, CV-10, is the centerpiece of this museum, and David Clark was kind enough to give Ford and his wife, Amie, a comprehensive tour of the ship.
USS Yorktown (CV-10) is an Essex-class aircraft carrier, the second U.S. Navy ship to carry the name after the first Yorktown (CV-5) was lost at the Battle of Midway in 1942. Nicknamed “The Fighting Lady,” CV-10 earned eleven battle stars for Pacific service in World War II, later served off Vietnam, and recovered the Apollo 8 astronauts in 1968. Decommissioned in 1970, she was towed to Mount Pleasant, South Carolina and opened in 1975 as the centerpiece of Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum, where visitors walk her hangar deck, flight deck, bridge, and island.
