The April 1946 All Hands article “Atomic ABC’s” provided enlisted naval personnel with a basic introduction to atomic energy and nuclear weapons in the months before Operation Crossroads. The seven-page primer explained the physics of fission, the development of the Manhattan Project, and what the Navy needed to understand about atomic weapons as the service prepared for a new era of naval warfare.
