This page from the June 1946 issue of All Hands — the Bureau of Naval Personnel magazine — describes how the propeller thrust of aircraft parked on deck could be used to help swing large carriers at slow speeds. With the ship nearly dead in the water, running up engines on one side of the flight deck could generate enough thrust to assist the rudder in turning the vessel — a practical seamanship technique in the immediate postwar fleet.
