Testing the Eugen

All Hands Magazine — March 1946

The March 1946 All Hands article “Testing the Eugen” covered the capture and planned use of the German heavy cruiser Prinz Eugen as a nuclear test target. Following Germany’s surrender in May 1945, the Prinz Eugen was taken as a U.S. war prize and sailed to the Pacific, where she was designated as a target vessel for Operation Crossroads. She survived both atomic detonations at Bikini Atoll in July 1946 but sustained cumulative damage and eventually capsized off Kwajalein Atoll in December 1946.
