The First Public Account of Radar

All Hands Magazine — August 1945

Published in the August 1945 issue of All Hands, this article provided the first public account of how radar worked and how it had contributed to Allied victory at sea. Throughout the war, radar had been one of the most closely guarded technical secrets — its existence known to the public in only the vaguest terms. With Japan’s surrender imminent, the Navy could finally explain the system that detected enemy ships and aircraft beyond visual range, directed gunfire in darkness, and guided fleets through fog and storms. Pages 10 through 12 of the original magazine are reproduced here.
