MacArthur and Hirohito

All Hands Magazine — November 1945

On September 27, 1945 — twenty-five days after Japan’s formal surrender on the deck of USS Missouri — General of the Army Douglas MacArthur received Emperor Hirohito at the American Embassy in Tokyo. It was the first time in Japanese history that a reigning emperor had called upon a foreigner. This page from the November 1945 All Hands recorded the moment alongside news of the Doolittle Raiders, whose B-25 strike on Tokyo in April 1942 had been the first blow against the Japanese home islands.
