They Ran But Won

All Hands Magazine — November 1945

A Pacific War naval action story — small vessels maneuvering to keep Japanese warships within range of their 40mm anti-aircraft guns. The memorable line “Hold on a little longer boys, we’re getting them into 40mm range” captures the improvised, close-quarters nature of many Pacific encounters. Published in All Hands, November 1945, as the Navy celebrated its victory in the Pacific.
