The Ryan FR-1 Fireball was one of the most innovative aircraft of the war years — a hybrid fighter combining a 1,350 HP Wright R-1820 piston engine in the nose with a General Electric J31 jet engine in the tail. First flown in June 1944, it entered service with the U.S. Navy in early 1945. This page from All Hands, November 1945, reveals the aircraft to the public following the end of World War II.
